Jeff Garcia Returns, Looks ‘Corroded’

Now that Jeff Garcia is healthy, ready to go, and has successfully survived the attempts of Tampa Bay’s front office to acquire yet another quarterback, he made his preseason debut last night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The initial reviews were less than stellar.

Roy Cummings of the writes that Garcia looked “corroded” in his two quarters of action, while Rick Stroud at the St. Petersburg Times describes the carnage — or hilarity, depending on your perspective — in great detail.Garcia, 38, sprayed passes all over the field. He threw footballs too high. Too low. Too hard. Too soft. He threw them overhand and underhanded. His passes went behind receivers and in front of them.
One pass was floated too high to Maurice Stovall and intercepted by Reggie Nelson. He underthrew Michael Clayton in the back of the end zone. And Nelson looked like the intended receiver again, recording another interception.
It almost sounds like Garcia was playing quarterback in a Dr. Seuss book. Anyway, the numbers would seem to confirm those observations, as the 38-year old finished 11-of-18 for 79 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.Continue Reading
