Josh McDaniels has claimed that Denver quarterback Jay Cutler isn't on the trading block. But if the Broncos' first-year head coach changes his mind, McDaniels could have another viable option as Cutler's replacement.

Tennessee quarterback Chris Simms is close to finalizing a free-agent contract with the Broncos, a source told FOXSports.com.

Simms, 28, spent last season with the Titans after being cut by Tampa Bay. The release ended a bumpy five-year Buccaneers run. Simms landed in then-coach Jon Gruden's doghouse after being the team's starter for 14 games in 2005 and 2006.

Simms appeared in only one game last season while mired behind Kerry Collins and Vince Young on the Titans bench. With Tennessee re-signing Collins, Simms' best chance for playing time in 2009 was with another team.Patrick Ramsey, who was Denver's backup quarterback the past two seasons, is expected to sign elsewhere as a free agent.

Cutler's future with the Broncos is in question after McDaniels reportedly tried trading him to Tampa Bay as part of a three-way deal that would have netted New England quarterback Matt Cassel. New England instead sent Cassel to Kansas City, leaving McDaniels to deal with an irate Cutler once news of the aborted deal leaked.
