REPORT CARD VS. COWBOYS
PASSING OFFENSE: C -- QB Jeff Garcia was hot early and moved the ball at will between the 20s. But the Bucs' red zone protection was woeful. They rank 29th in the NFL in red zone efficiency. WR Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard were limited with injuries, but the Bucs need to pass, catch and protect better.
RUSHING OFFENSE: D -- The Bucs failure on third-and-1 early in the game that forced them to settle for a field goal was the biggest play of the game. Tampa Bay was held to 48 yards on the ground on 19 carries.
PASS DEFENSE: B -- The only thing the Bucs didn't do was force some turnovers. They sacked QB Brad Johnson three times and had their hands on several passes. But it wasn't enough. Two pass interference penalties led to the decisive TD pass from Johnson to Roy Williams.
RUSH DEFENSE: B -- The tackling wasn't as crisp as it had been the previous two weeks. But Marion Barber had something to do with that. Tampa Bay also lost Jermaine Phillips late in the first half.
SPECIAL TEAMS: C -- Fumbling the second half kickoff for the second straight week is a real downer. But rookie Clifton Smith did a good job otherwise in the return game. Matt Bryant missed a 51-yard field goal.
COACHING: D -- Jon Gruden needs to look harder at the offensive coordinator for the struggles in the red zone. Until Tampa Bay starts running the ball successfully down there, the passing lanes will be pretty small.
