Tampa Bay Buccaneers Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-30
Bucs signed G Matt Lentz and TE Jason Pociask to the practice squad. In addition, the team released WR Paris Warren from the practice squad.

PLAYER NOTES

--RB Warrick Dunn is likely not going to play Sunday at Kansas City. He has a pinched nerve in his back and coach Jon Gruden said in hindsight, Dunn should not have attempted to play last week at Dallas. He was held to one carry for 6 yards.

--S Jermaine Phillips has a broken left forearm and could miss 4-6 weeks. The Bucs will wait until at least after the bye week to re-evaluate his injury.

--S Sabby Piscitelli will make his first NFL start at Kansas City. He has participated in about 35 percent of the snaps this season.

--WR Michael Clayton has a knee injury and was limited in practice on Wednesday. He is expected to play against the Chiefs.

--DT Jovan Haye has a foot sprain and was limited in practice on Wednesday. He's expected to play against the Chiefs.

--WR Maurice Stovall has a hamstring strain and was limited in practice on Wednesday. He will be questionable for Sunday's game at Kansas City.

GAME PLAN: The Bucs will follow a simple game plan - re-establish a potent running game behind their big offensive line.

With injuries to FBs B. J. Askew and Byron Storer, the Bucs have been limited in the running game. Tailback Earnest Graham has been asked to play some fullback. Warrick Dunn is hurt and ineffective.

But Tampa Bay cannot continue to battle New Orleans for the NFL lead in pass attempts.

"I want to run the ball better," Gruden said. "We've run the ball 54 times for 120 yards the last 54 carries. That ain't good enough. We've got a good line. I want to be great. We want to run the ball better. We've got to get some healthy backs, we've got to get (Joey) Galloway healthy, we've got to get a number of guys. B.J. Askew included, that would certainly help us."

The key for the Chiefs will be preventing turnovers, particularly QB Tyler Thigpen. The Bucs saw their streak of 21 games with at least one turnover broken last week at Dallas.

The good news for the Chiefs is that Thigpen did not turn the ball over in a loss to the Jets last Sunday.

"That has been good, but we get to plus-three and we still lose and that's tough," Edwards said. "Normally you win games when you are plus three. I would hope so and then when we get the ability to score, we have to score and finish the game and that is what we didn't do last week. We didn't finish the game.

"We had an opportunity to finish the football game and we didn't do it. It is another learning experience for them. At is what they have to learn. So I think they understand if they play well, they are going to have a chance to win some games down the stretch."

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez vs. Bucs S Sabby Piscitelli -- The perennial all-pro will run some seam routes right at Piscitelli, who is making his first NFL start.

Chiefs RDT Glenn Dorsey vs. Bucs LG Arron Sears: Dorsey is the Chiefs' touted first-round pick has 23 tackles and a forced fumble. Sears, a promising second-year player from Tennessee, is one of the Bucs best run blockers.

Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen vs. Bucs CB Ronde Barber: The Bucs feast on inexperienced QBs and Barber's ability to disguise coverage and blitzes from the slot position will be a problem.

INJURY IMPACT: RB Warrick Dunn has a pinched nerve in his back and did not practice Wednesday. He very likely could miss Sunday's game at Kansas City. That means the Bucs will play RB Michael Bennett, who was inactive last week at Dallas.

--FB B.J. Askew was limited in practice Wednesday and is questionable. The Bucs have been short-handed at FB and may have to rely again on Jameel Cook.

--S Jermaine Phillips is out with a broken left forearm and will not play. He will be replaced by Sabby Piscitelli.
